HEP: Hip (Trochanteric) Bursitis

Patient Education

What’s going on?

  • Your hip bursa is a fluid-filled sac that helps reduce friction at your hip joint.

  • Inflammation of this bursa can be caused by either recent or new repetitive activity, which leads to overuse and/or strain. It may also be aggravated by excessive pressure, such as lying or falling on the involved side.

  • As a result, you may feel pain on the outside of the hip, where your bursa is located.

  • Exacerbation of this pain will occur when walking, lying on the painful side, squatting, climbing stairs or playing sports.

How long will it take?

  • If you make the necessary adjustments to your daily activities to decrease the pressure on the bursa and regularly complete your home exercise program, you will see significant improvements in approximately six weeks.

How will we treat your condition at IHSM?

  • At IHSM, a doctor of physical therapy will perform a detailed physical examination to determine what specific muscles, movements or positions that may have led to your injury or symptoms.

  • Based on the findings, we will design a specific treatment plan to help you recover.

  • You will likely also have an exercise program to increase the strength of your hip muscles (glute med and glute max) for improved control of the lower extremity.

  • We will work on restoring normal length and flexibility of the glute med, glute max and tensor fasciae latae muscle groups with stretching or foam rolling.

  • Modalities such as acupuncture, or electrical stimulation may also be used to control the pain in your hip.

  • In addition, we will also work with you to explore ways to perform bothersome activities in a more comfortable and efficient manner.

What can you do to help yourself?

  • Adherence to our comprehensive home exercise program is essential to ensure an optimal recovery.

  • You may apply ice or heat pack to your hip to decrease pain and increase blood flow respectively.

  • Refrain from performing activities that exacerbate the pain like sleeping on the painful side or sitting with crossed legs.

Instructions:

You can do the first 2 stretches to begin stretching the muscles that run along the outside of your hip. You can continue with the rest of the exercises when the sharp pain decreases.
