HEP: Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Patient Education

What’s going on?

  • Lateral knee pain during repetitive sporting activity can be caused by the rubbing of a tendon on sensitive bony tissue.

  • This problem often occurs because of poor strength and muscle control at the hips.

  • Foot posture may also contribute to the problematic alignment of the lower quarter.

  • If this is left untreated over time, your body will learn to perform incorrect movement patterns, which result in a further tightening and weakening of muscles which explains why this problem keeps recurring.

How long will it take?

  • If you complete the necessary changes in your daily activities to improve your body alignment, decrease repetitive activities, and regularly complete for your home exercise routine, you will see significant improvements in about 6 weeks.

How will we treat your condition at IHSM?

  • At IHSM, a doctor of physical therapy will perform a detailed physical examination to determine specific tissues, joints, and muscles responsible for knee pain. Based on the findings, your therapist will design a specific treatment plan to ensure an optimal recovery as well as decrease the chance of a reoccurrence.

  • An exercise program will be designed to enhance stability and strengthen your knees and hips by causing muscular changes and improving alignment.

  • Modalities such as acupuncture, ice, infrared heat or electrical stimulation may also be used to control the pain or inflammation.

  • Soft tissue mobilization of the muscle can be done to ensure that the scar tissue becomes as flexible as possible.

What can you do to help yourself?

  • Take the necessary time to rest form offending activity to allow the tissue time to recover.

  • Adherence to your home exercise program is essential to ensure an optimal recovery.

  • You may apply ice or heat pack to your knee to increase decrease pain and increase blood flow.

  • consider lowering your seat height on your bicycle slightly.

  • Switch directions when training on a track or running on the streets.
